High dynamic range imaging, or HDRI, is a technique used to create awesome images using desktop imaging software such as Photoshop. HDR images are created by combining various exposures of the same image together to create an image that enhances the intensity levels of both shadows and areas of light. The HDR process creates an image with intensified colors, lighting, and detail. This process has been around since the 1930s when a few professional photographers founded the technique, but in the mid-1990s it became a more mainstream imaging technique because of the availability of inexpensive digital cameras and desktop imaging software.
